A 2021 study from the University of Tokyo examined how the medium used to record information could influence memory and brain activity. The research, published in Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, involved 48 adults between 18 and 29 years old.
Participants read a fictional conversation containing appointments, class schedules and assignment deadlines. They then recorded the information using either a paper datebook, a tablet or a smartphone.
The participants who used paper completed the task in about 11 minutes. Those using tablets took around 14 minutes, while smartphone users took approximately 16 minutes.
An hour later, participants answered questions about the information while researchers monitored their brain activity with functional MRI scans.
The paper group showed greater activity in several brain regions associated with language, visual processing and memory, including the hippocampus. They also performed better on some of the simpler memory questions.

Why might paper make a difference?
